Residence Hall Student Kitchens, Penn State University - Beaver, Mont Alto, Greater Allegheny and Hazelton Campuses

Project Completion: 2018

Project Highlights:

  • In April of 2018, Hoffman Leakey was asked to quickly design two kitchens to be added to residence halls at two different Penn State campuses in time for the Fall Semester. Shortly after, the project was expanded to include two additional kitchens at other campuses. Our team assessed each location and rapidly develop four similar layouts.

  • To create a more homelike atmosphere, designers added a dropped grid ceiling over the space with pendant lighting illuminating a center island.

  • Finishes are unique to each building, but all feature warm wood tones and pops of color.

  • The design addressed ADA accessibility and includes special fire suppression systems and oven/range controls.

  • Renderings helped the University to envision how the kitchens would look within existing lounge spaces.

  • Documents were completed within weeks to allow for bidding in May and construction over the summer months.

  • The beautiful new kitchens at Harmony Hall (Beaver), McKeesport Hall (Greater Allegheny) Mont Alto Hall (Mont Alto), and South Hall (Hazelton) were delivered within budget and ready for students to enjoy in the fall.
