Canstruction comes to State College

May 10, 2017

Earlier this year, HLA along with the Nittany Mall and Wegman's State College, had the distinct pleasure of bringing a unique, charitable event to our area that engaged our local community and gave back in a big way. With the help of generous sponsors, volunteers, and enthusiastic teams, Canstruction State College came to life after nearly a year of careful planning by our tremendous steering committee led by Lisa Hayes from HLA.

Having lived and worked in various cities across the country, Lisa was surprised to learn that State College did not already have an event similar to Canstruction, given our generous and active community and our strong local presence in design, architecture, engineering, construction and education. Bound and determined to change that, she set out with a mission of bringing this event to State College; not surprisingly, the concept was met with tremendous support and enthusiasm.

Working closely with our benefactor, The State College Food Bank, we established the highest priority needs and their time of greatest scarcity of donations in-coming. From this information, we scheduled and hosted our first ever Canstruction State College on April 19, 2017. Teams were provided with the priority needs list upon entry, all items that Wegman's had helped to guarantee quantities of for purposes of the competition.

Canstruction State College had six teams compete for 6 different judged categories and 2 special local prizes this year, designing and building sculptures made almost entirely out of canned goods listed on the Food Bank's priority needs list. The sculptures were on display at The Nittany Mall for 10 days, and helped to educate and raise awareness about food insecurity in our community. The impact that we had in our first year was tremendous!

Together we raised just shy of 15,000 pounds of food

and just over $15,000.00 in monetary donations!

Because of the wonderful support and participation that Canstruction State College received in 2017, we are pleased to announce that plans for Canstruction State College 2018 are already underway, we CAN't wait to see what our second year brings!!
